Locals Shezi and Duma dominate Sani Stagger

2009-11-30 00:00

LOCAL Underberg athletes Philip Shezi and Eric Duma dominated the record field of over 600 runners who lined up for Saturday’s Sani Stagger Marathon and Down Run 21km event.

Shezi secured his hat-trick of wins by powering his way up the daunting, tortuous rock-strewn switchbacks from the Sani Pass golf course to the Lesotho border post, at 2 874 metres above sea level. With scant regard for the splendor of the view from the top of the world, the lightweight runner had 10 minutes in hand over club mate Duma when he commenced the quad-shattering descent back to the finish.

In the first half, Shezi and Duma had accounted for the much-publicised visit by a squad of leading Mr Price Comrades runners who may be faster on the tar, but were given a lesson in rock hopping in this marathon disguised as an ultra.

The initial misty conditions were quickly burnt away by the sun, which saw temperatures spiral into the thirties, baking participants in the clear Drakensburg air, and slowing Shezi, who finished in three hours 15 minutes 59 seconds. In better conditions Dmitir Grishine’s 3:11 course record could have been in danger, but the performance still provides a clear indication of the local athletes’ talent and potential.

Duma, who tired over the final quarter, finished in three hours 38 minutes 38 seconds, with the Mr Price duo of Kwenza Ngubane and Petros Sosibo completing most of the course together to finish in 3:40:18.

Ngubane was given the nod by the line judge for third place overall, whereas Sosibo took honours in the 35-39 age group.
