Longmarket Girls’ School saddened by death of pupil

LONGMARKET Girls’ School is mourning the loss of a 13-year-old pupil who was knocked down and killed by a taxi this week.

Grade 7 pupil Sindiswa Mabaso was standing on a pavement at a taxi rank in town when a taxi drove into her on Tuesday.

Principal Deryl Muir told The Witness the school was saddened by her death.

“It was a very unnecessary, tragic accident. We understand that she was standing at a taxi rank in town and a taxi failed to negotiate a corner and then climbed the pavement and knocked her down.”

Muir said teachers and pupils alike had been devastated by the news.

“A day after we learnt [of her death] we called all the pupils and the teachers to inform them.

“To call the children and tell them that someone they knew was not coming back and they will never see her again was painful.

“She was a beautiful child and never did anything wrong.”

Muir said the school would hold a memorial service today.

There was an outpouring of grief on the school’s Facebook page, where Sindiswa’s picture had been posted, with many people posting messages.
