Lotto: most NGO’s have to say ta-ta to chance of funding

2011-12-23 00:00

NON-profit organisations dependent on the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) may be left in the lurch as the fund is battling to meet the sector’s increasing financial demands.

This emerged after the Fund’s provincial consultations and national road shows, which revealed that the funding applications have doubled.

National Lotteries Board spokesperson Sershan Naidoo yesterday said that the organisations need to look at other ways of securing funds and not only depend on the Lotteries board.

“Charities that have hopes of surviving need to look at fund-raising opportunities and other investors within the government sector. We also have to meet the needs of organisations in the rural areas and the disabled who are vulnerable and in need,” said Naidoo.

So far the board has received 8 500 applications in the charities sector with the value of the requests placed in the region of R40 billion. However the fund only has R1,7 billion for the 2011/2012 financial year.

Pietermaritzburg Community Chest Executive Director Michael Deegan said they are very concerned about NGOs getting de-registered because the board has run out of funding.
