Lovely new face with nasty plans

2013-02-04 00:00

THERE’S a feisty new femme fatale on Scandal! — and the target in her sights is hapless Mangi Nyathi.

Kefilwe has been recruited by Donna Hardy to seduce Mangi, the new chief executive office of NZH, and to then cry rape.

It’s all part of a new plan to destroy Donna’s arch rival and Mangi’s dad, Daniel.

When, however, Kefilwe has second thoughts about Donna’s plan, she puts the brakes on — only to come up with something even more nasty … getting recovering addict Mangi back on drugs.

It’s a really juicy storyline and Pearl Modiade, the young actress playing Kefilwe, is thrilled to have the chance to work opposite Scandal! veterans, Louise Barnes and Kagiso Modupe.

“Louise has been great,” she says, “I was a little intimidated at first because she’s so experienced, but I really feel I can learn a lot from her.

“Kagiso is also lovely. I’ve interviewed him before so I was very comfortable with him when we started filming.”

Asked if she had done any research to help her understand and portray Kefilwe, who has a track record of drug taking, Modiade said she had spoken to a former addict who told her about some of the things she did when she was high or in need of a fix.

“They were all things which I could mimic,” Modiade said. “It’s been challenging, but I think I’ve pulled it off.”

As for what she thinks about her character, she says she understands what drives her. “Kefilwe is someone who is determined to support her family and will stop at nothing to achieve that aim,” Modiade added.

Born and raised in Thembisa on the East Rand, Modiade, a former Craz-e presenter and Sistahood producer, first appeared on television, reviewing books for English Express on SABC2, when she was in grade nine.

Right now, however, the actress — who also works as a DJ at YFM — loves being on Scandal!

“I’ve been a fan of the show for years … and I really hope that I can stick around for a long time because I’m really enjoying playing Kefilwe,” Modiade added.

• Scandal! is broadcast Monday to Thursday at 7.30 pm on e.tv.
