Lovers’ tiffs suspected in two murders

2008-05-21 00:00

Two murders believed to have been the result of disputes between lovers took place in the space of about four hours in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday night.

In the first incident, in Berg Street at 6 pm, a man hanged himself after he had allegedly fatally shot a woman believed to be his girlfriend.

The man’s body was discovered in the communal bathroom of the house where he lived. A locksmith’s employee found the body hanging when tenants who suspected something amiss called for help to unlock the bathroom door.

Police arrived later to find the body of a woman in the man’s bedroom. She had a bullet wound in the head.

“A firearm was also found. It is believed that she was the girlfriend of the deceased found in the bathroom, and was fatally shot by the boyfriend prior to him committing suicide,” said police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram.

At about 10.30 pm the body of woman was discovered with a stab wound in the chest in Bob Mattison informal settlement on the New Greytown Road.

Police suspect that the second woman’s murderer is her boyfriend, who is still at large.

No arrests have been made in either case.
