MEC bans long trips for schools

2012-09-17 00:00

EDUCATION MEC Senzo Mchunu has banned all public school trips for academic and extramural activities that involve pupils travelling long distances, effective from today.

Mchunu said a circular suspending all long-distance trips till the year-end would be sent to all district directors in the province today.

“The only long-distance travelling pupils should do is from home to school and back home.

“We have to take extraordinary measures to protect our children … If an accident like this can take place over a long distance, we can prevent it from happening, but by not allowing pupils to travel long distances,” he said.

“If a school is in dire need to travel long distances for any reason, they would have to seek permission from the district HOD, who will review the request and approve or disapprove,” he said.

“Even when schools request permission to travel long distances we will investigate them stringently.” he said.

Mchunu said that another meeting to review the situation and plan what would happen in the 2013 school year would take place in December.
