MEC embarrassed by KZN’s road death stats

2012-12-03 00:00

AN average of 110 people die in road accidents in KwaZulu-Natal every month, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu said on Thursday.

Mchunu was briefing members of the provincial legislature on transport issues.

He said road accidents and death statistics were not only embarrassing, but showed the levels of inconsiderate and reckless driving of KZN motorists.

Through Operation Valingozi (prevent accidents), officials visited owners of taverns and encouraged them to sell liquor responsibly.

They also spoke with patrons about the dangers of driving and walking while drunk.

The statistics given by Mchunu in the legislature showed a decline in the number of road deaths from last year.

Between April and November 2011 and the same period in 2012, the numbers dropped by 397. There were 1 483 accidents in 2011 and 1 086 in 2012.

The month-to-month statistics for 2012 showed that on average 110 people were killed a month, with July recording the most deaths when 176 people were killed in 164 accidents.

The most common causes of accidents were drunken and reckless driving, overloading and unroadworthy vehicles.

“The only consolation from all these statistics is that we have not reached a number of 200 people killed per month on these roads this year,” Mchunu told MPLs.
