MEC furious at CEO’s alleged car fiasco

2008-06-15 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Mtholephi Mthimkhulu yesterday expressed fury over allegations that the chief executive officer of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW), Khulani Mkhize, “disappeared” with a rented car that was later found crashed during the entity’s visit to the Tembe Elephant Park last weekend.

“I am very furious and perturbed by this. I am tired of the negative things that keep on tainting this important wing of my department,” he told The Witness yesterday.

Mthimkhulu, however, said he was not in possession of detailed information on the alleged crash adding that he is awaiting a formal report.

“I have only been briefed verbally by the chairman of the board who phoned me early this week to say that there was a ‘very serious’ matter involving the CEO and the hired car that the board was dealing about. He [the board chairman] told me that the CEO had disappeared with the hired vehicle, which was later involved in a crash,” he said.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Mtubatuba police have no record of the accident. The report further states that the van, hired by KZNEW board from Avis in Pietermaritzburg, is currently sitting at a Durban panelbeater who says it will cost “at least R60 000” to repair.
