MEC reveals plans to bounce back after pass rate shock

2015-01-10 00:00

EDUCATION MEC Peggy Nkonyeni yesterday announced “Operation Bounce Back” to counter the province’s parlous results in the national matric examination.

KZN recorded a 7,7% decline in the matric pass rate — the worst drop in the country.

The announcement of the action plan came after an ad hoc meeting of senior Education Department officials yesterday.

Head of department Dr Nkosinathi Sishi said the immediate focus would be to assist failed matriculants who were eligible for the supplementary examinations.

“One of our responsibilities is to come up with a well thought-out intervention strategy to assist the 31 188 learners who qualify for the supplementary examinations starting on February 2,” he said.

Issues like budgetary constraints, insufficient tools of trade, lack of requisite skills in some instances dominated the discussion.

As a way forward, Sishi announced that all districts will have to face the panel of top management members and present their turnaround strategies starting on Monday.
