MEC to launch food banks drive

2011-01-28 00:00

AGRICULTURE, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development MEC Lydia Johnson will today launch the Food Bank food production initiative in Makhathini Flats near Jozini.

Department spokeperson Ncumisa Mafunda said the initiative is geared towards enhancing food security in the province.

She said the department had entered into an agreement with Food Bank as part of the government’s continuing efforts to ensure food security and the commercial viability of farming in the entire province by creating markets for the farmers.

In its website, the Food Bank describes itself as a leading national food banking network with offices all over the country. It co-ordinates efforts to establish food banks in communities with the highest concentration of food-insecure people.
