MEC to present chess sets to schools in Nkandla

2011-02-10 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Minister of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Weziwe Thusi, will be presenting 300 chess sets to different schools in the Nkandla area.

Thusi said the donation is in response to the president’s call to popularise chess games among young people.

The MEC will be accompanied by members of KwaZulu Chess, an organisation that will be administering the distribution of the chess sets and responsible for chess development programmes.

Thusi is also expected to announce multi-million rand sport development initiatives that will benefit the area. Sport and Recreation spokesperson Vukani Mbhele said the department had set aside R2,5 million towards the building of a sportsfield.

South African Breweries has joined the initiative and will fund the construction of an eight-a-side legacy football field with a surrounding wall and artificial turf.

Vukani said the facility will benefit local teams, schools and the community at large.

He added that this financial year MEC Thusi has already launched six sport projects of this nature, which are the Department of Sport and Recreation’s flagship projects.
