MEC warns of mega traffic blitz

2014-12-13 00:00

IN an effort to curb accidents, road blocks on the busiest roads in the province will be enforced this weekend.

The MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has ordered the massive traffic enforcement operation that will see traffic officials around the province look out for driver and vehicle fitness, speed timing, barrier line infringement, unsafe overtaking, unsafe lane changing and drinking and driving.

“We are expecting an influx of motorists to descend to our province this weekend, following the closure of schools, firms and other places of work and ahead of the Reconciliation Day (16 December) next week Tuesday.”

These operations include overnight multi-disciplinary road blocks across the province, that started yesterday and will run through the weekend.

The MEC who urged all traffic officials to take a harsh approach to those who violate traffic regulations said that more than 3 380 law enforcement officials have been deployed.

“Over and above that, there will be several booze buses that will be in all major road blocks throughout the province. We urge road users to take responsibility and strictly adhere to all traffic laws so we can prevent road accidents and fatalities,” said Mchunu.
