MTV-Base takes a liking to KZN’s Bantwini

2011-04-09 00:00

MTV-BASE will feature KwaZulu-Natal star, Mr Swagger himself, Zakes Bantwini this month as part of their Brand:New slot.

Artists who have featured on Brand:New to date include South Africans J.R. and AKA; Gabonese hip hop prodigy Jo Jo; Mama winners Mo’ Chedda (Nigeria) and Cabo Snoop (Angola); and Kenya’s Muthoni.

Now it’s Bantwini’s turn in the spotlight and he’s revelling in the full Brand:New treatment. His own Top 10 show and short cameos about his life and career will be airing on MTV- Base throughout April, while his video, Wasting My Time, will be receiving 120 spins a week.

The 30-year-old from KwaMashu has been relishing the life of a superstar with the success of his gold-selling Clap your Hands off his album Love Light and Music.

Weekend Witness tracked him down to hear how he sees the SA music scene.

According to Bantwini, in the early days of Kwaito, business acumen was overlooked, but these days, without it “you might as well go sing under a tree”.

He studied music at the Durban University of Technology (then Natal Technikon) in 2001, and is currently pursuing a degree in music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

“My genre is Urban Dance and I believe that with it I can make a serious dent in the industry.”

On his fashion style, he said: “I make it work, I guess how you wear what you wear is more important than what you wear”.

Bantwini looks forward to the added mileage on MTV-Base. “Hats off to MTV for putting us African artists on the international stage,” he said.
