MXit gets socially responsible with QuizMax

2011-05-25 00:00

YOU’VE probably heard the urban legend about a 52-year-old charmer chatting up a 15-year-old girl on MXit — only to discover that the school girl he is busy preying on is actually his daughter doing homework in the next room.

QuizMax, MXit’s new tutoring and quiz portal, now offers proof that social networks can — and do — provide a socially responsible platform as well.

QuizMax is a team effort between MXit and a group of South African teachers and is designed to help matriculants navigate challenging subjects such as mathematics and physical and life sciences in preparation for their mid-year exams.

Ian McDougall, business manager of Learning to the Max, the company that created QuizMax, said many pupils, especially those in rural areas, often don’t have access to learning materials or computers.

However, over 80% of them own a mobile phone.

“QuizMax supports learners by offering a suite of free mobile learning tools.

“Over 90 000 quizzes were completed by learners in March and April alone and those numbers continue to increase.

“We believe that QuizMax helps to captivate learners and makes practising model questions in these subjects more fun, especially when coupled with the fact that it’s featured on a platform that is being used by a great proportion of South Africa youth.

“They like technology, and they love using MXit — a win-win combination for us,” added McDougall.

Laura Hallam, who heads a division of MXit that creates platforms for social good, said this partnership fits well with their overall vision of creating features and platforms that add real value to the lives of their users.

She said programmes like QuizMax have the potential not only to assist the Basic Education Department to encourage pupils struggling in these learning areas, but also to help change pupils’ perceptions of these subjects.

QuizMax currently makes provision for grade 12 pupils, but it plans ton introduce it for other grades.

Pupils who want to access QuizMax but are not on MXit should open their mobile browsers, type in m.mxit.com and follow the prompts. Once in MXit, go to MXit/tradepost/MXitcares/QuizMax.

In a presentation that underscores the usefulness of mobile social media , the country manager for Google South Africa, Stafford Masie, told a recent IT conference that worldwide usage of mobile phones is at its highest level ever. She added that 78% of all cellphone users in South Africa do not own a computer, while over 85% will never own one in their lifetime.
