MXit helps police find abusers of the service

2011-06-23 00:00

FOLLOWING a story detailing the rape of a young Port Shepstone woman in Pietermaritzburg after she responded to a job advert on MXit, the mobile social network yesterday released a statement saying they take a tough stance on cyber crime on its digital marketplace, MXit Xchange, by adopting some of the most stringent guidelines in the classifieds industry.

Juan du Toit, International Business Development Manager for MXit, said all job adverts that are not supported by a company name on MXit Xchange are immediately removed from the platform, to prevent suspicious activity.

“MXit has also proactively contacted the South African Police Force to offer its support in bringing those that abuse its platform to book.

“We have worked really hard to make MXit one of the safest social platforms and we simply cannot condone any abuse of our platform or potential abuse by any person in our community of users.

Du Toit said MXit Xchange has more than 18,5 million subscribers and there are thousands of advertisements posted on a daily basis.

“Every single advertisement is evaluated against very strict guidelines and moderated prior to being made public on a continuous basis. Our users also help to report any suspicious activities which we then investigate.”

He urged users to be extremely cautious and vigilant when interacting with contacts established through the social media platform.

Du Toit said MXit has various security measures in place to protect its users.
