Madiba: Monument to be unveiled in Imbali

2008-07-16 00:00

A monument to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s last public speech before his arrest is to be unveiled at Imbali on his birthday tomorrow.

The Plessislaer Arya Samaj Hall in Imbali, the site of the monument, is where Mandela made his last public speech on March 25, 1961, at the All-in-Africa conference before being arrested outside Howick the following year.

The monument, a voter’s cross, is the work of Gert Swart. The local sculptor was commissioned by the Sunday Times Heritage project in 2006 to mark its 100th year of publication.

Msunduzi municipal spokesman Brian Zuma said that while the unveiling will be at the hall, the main event will be held at the adjacent Indumiso campus sportsgrounds.

ANC provincial chairman Zweli Mkhize will deliver an address. Other speakers include Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo and a few people who were at the 1961 meeting.

Madiba: Free meals for nineties

All people in their nineties will be able to enjoy a free meal at Nando’s tomorrow in honour of Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Nando’s announced yesterday that they will join Madiba’s celebrations by dishing out free chicken on Madiba’s behalf to every citizen over the age of 90.

“The African spirit of ubuntu is part of our joint heritage, and as a brand proudly born and bred in South Africa, Nando’s knows that taking care of … our elders is an African ideal that is rewarded with long, healthy years,” said Sylvester Chauke, Nando’s SA marketing manager.

“Hopefully, the rest of us will be inspired by them and will show as much spunk when we get to that number 90!”
