Madiba: Movie sets to be donated

2012-07-17 00:00

DURBAN-based film producer Anant Singh, who is currently in production on the film, Long Walk To Freedom, announced yesterday that several of the key sets created for the film are to be donated to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

The sets will be housed in the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu and other heritage facilities; and will allow the public to be transported through time to experience places that have had great significance in former president Nelson Mandela’s history.

They include the courtroom of the Palace Of Justice, Mandela’s Robben Island prison cell, the Robben Island visitors’ centre, the interior of his Orlando West home, and the prison courtyard. All the sets were designed by production designer, Johnny Breedt, and were built by a team of local artisans.

“The team working on Long Walk To Freedom have created historically significant places and objects and we are delighted to share this with the public through the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and the Nelson Mandela Museum to ensure that our people can benefit from these creations in locations that are easily accessible,” Singh said.

The film started principle photography in KwaZulu-Natal at the end of May. Scenes are currently being shot in Cape Town and filming will also take place in Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape.
