Madiba statue: city eyes 8 sites

2014-05-30 00:00

THE city has taken another step towards erecting a statue of former president Nelson Mandela with the release of eight possible sites this week.

The Witness reported in January that council mandated municipal manager S’bu Sithole to investigate a possible location for the statue as well as the financial implications of its creation.

Sithole was given until February to submit his findings and recommendations to the executive committee. However, at Tuesday’s Exco meeting the matter was on the list but was not tabled.

Tozi Mthethwa, municipal communications director, said Sithole is yet to present his findings on the matter and that at this stage no resolution has been made. The item on the agenda lists eight possible sites for the statue, some of which have some historical background while others have been identified because of their prominence and easy access to the public.

eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo said the matter will be tabled at the next executive committee meeting. He said the council was still in support of the statue, as it was unanimously voted for by members when it was proposed last year.

“We will still follow the procedure. The manager [Sithole] still needed to finalise his report … In the process of sharing ideas as the executive council on this issue, we also need to touch base with the Madiba family.”

THE eight identified sites in town are: Farewell Square; central Church Walk; north side of the city hall; south side of the city hall; Red Square; O.R. Tambo Parade; Walnut Road triangular island and the Centrum site adjacent to the new central library.
