Magna Carta to play in Pietermaritzburg

2008-07-07 00:00

LEGENDARY 70s folk band Magna Carta will be performing in Pietermaritzburg in the Botanical Gardens, hosted by the Maritzburg Musicians Club (MMC) on Sunday, July 20. The concert starts at noon. Also performing on the day will be up-and-coming South African band Southern Gypsy Queen and local favourites the Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Ilan Lax, Zephyr and the Ryan Calder Band. The concert will be in a new amphitheatre setting on the hill at the west end of the Gardens (beyond the restaurant), and will give locals an opportunity to relax and enjoy a picnic in the winter sun listening to fine music.

This will be Magna Carta’s last tour, having announced that they will part ways in May next year. Playing at 13 venues across the country and covering all the major cities, as well as many minor ones, fans will have an opportunity to see one of the greatest acoustic acts in the world perform songs from 40 years of notable classics such as Seasons, Lord of the Ages and Putting it Back Together. With album sales in excess of 8 million worldwide, Magna Carta are one of music industry’s greats. They have played at London's Royal Albert Hall five times – where they recorded a live album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1970 – and have done twenty nine tours across the world, from Katmandhu to the Rain Forest, Iraq and others. In total, the band has visited sixty one countries in thirty five years. They are one of the longest running acoustic acts in the world, and have played alongside the likes of Cat Stevens, Judy Collins, America, Country Joe, Richard Thompson, Arlo Guthrie, Ralph McTell, the Beach Boys, David Bowie, and Dire Straits. They have made two movies and two DVD's, and have just finished their thirty eighth album.

MMC has nominated DUCT (Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust) as the beneficiary for this event. DUCT is a public benefit organisation that champions the environmental health of the river systems in and around Pietermaritzburg. For more information, go to http://www.duct.org.za.
