Major schools’ rugby players in action

2010-03-13 00:00

SCHOOLS rugby gets underway in earnest this weekend with all the major rugby-playing schools in action. The first of the local festivals also takes place, at Wartburg.

Two of the top four sides in the province last year, Westville and Kearsney, meet on Stott field at Kearsney. Westville had a tough opening encounter against Michaelhouse last week, where they went down 17-18 and if they have eliminated mistakes that led to penalties against them, they will be very competitive.

Kearsney did not have an ideal match to start the season as they won too easily against Voortrekker and were not tested, particularly in defence. This is an important game in the context of KZN schools rugby and Kearsney will be intent to reverse last year’s result where they lost 8-15 against Westville. The match is being televised live as an FNB Classic Clash beginning at 2.30 pm.

For those in the capital, the game at Hilton, where they host St Charles, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. In 2009 Hilton won an exciting encounter 19-18 and they will again, with home support, hope to get their season off to a good start. St Charles have a young team, but will give of their best.

Maritzburg College travel to play Durban High School in their centenary of rugby. The first of 182 matches between these traditional rivals was played in 1910 at College, which the latter won 5-0. Last year a relatively weak College team had an easy win against DHS and rumours suggest that College is looking very competitive this year, therefore they will be hoping to get off to a good start.

Glenwood, the top KZN team in 2009, play their first match against struggling Voortrekker. Michaelhouse will work on mistakes made last week when they travel to Durban to play George Campbell.

Fixtures (home side first): Kearsney vs Westville; Hilton vs St Charles; DHS vs Maritzburg College; Glenwood vs Voortrekker; George Campbell vs Michaelhouse; Hillcrest vs Michaelhouse II; Richardsbaai vs Northwood; Empangeni vs Northwood II; Port Shepstone vs Kokstad; Kuswag vs Suidnatal; Felixton vs Wembley

At Wartburg: Linpark vs New Forest; Ixopo vs St Henrys; Greytown vs Werda; Grosvenor vs Alexandra; Scottburgh vs Estcourt; Howick vs Durban Academy; Carter vs Kloof; Wartburg vs Kingsway
