‘Make the most of opportunity I never had,’ says Zuma

2014-10-06 00:00

OVER 100 recipients of the Jacob Zuma Foundation’s bursary scheme were told to make the best of their opportunities — chances he would have welcomed in his youth.

Zuma said graduates must make the most of the opportunity he was never given.

“I had a dream when I was a boy; if I went to school, I wanted to be a teacher, a pastor or a lawyer,” he said.

The graduates met with the president on Saturday at the Durban ICC. Also in attendance were Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande.

Nzimande said the funding from the foundation is a huge contribution to higher education in South Africa. “It provides relief to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme and these students are lucky to be funded 100%.”

Princess Zungu from KwaDabeka near Pinetown, who received a bursary to study marketing management at the Rosebank College, said she was the first person to receive a degree in her family.

“This was my only opportunity to study; my parents were not able to send me to study, so I am very grateful to everyone who has helped.”

She said the foundation had inspired her to start her own organisation at the age of 21 last year.

“Last year, I founded Passion for the Youth in Edutainment, which encourages young people through education,” she said.

The Foundation began in 2008 and supports students from across the country and in 45 institutions of higher learning. It provides students with financial and material support, including fees, accommodation and books.
