Making waves: New fm signal being tested

2011-08-20 00:00

YOU’D be forgiven for thinking that you’ve watched Transformers too many times if you noticed your car radio spelling things out for you when you tune in to East Coast Radio. Relax — it’s simply being sent some additional information on what’s currently on air.

The Durban-based radio station is fine-tuning a new signal that displays the title of the song being played and the name of artist on modern

radios’ digital screens.

The technology is commonly known is a Radio Data System, or RDS, a standard way of embedding and sending out digital information in conventional FM radio broadcasts.

Other neat RDS tricks available include a signal which stops/pauses CD or audio casette when the traffic and news bulletins are broadcast.

The technology was piloted on Johannesburg radio stations, and East Coast Radio is the first KZN radio station to test out the gadgetry. — WWR.
