Malema YouTube video has gunfire

2011-10-13 00:00

AGAINST the background of crackling AK47 rifles, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema invites South Africans to join him in a mass march for economic freedom in a video posted on YouTube.

Titled ANCYL President Julius Malema’s Clarion Call to Economic Freedom Fighters!, the one-minute film is meant to mobilise participation in the ANCYL’s two days of mass action scheduled for October 27 and 28.

The film was posted a week ago and as by last night had received just over 500 views, and quite a bit of negative comment.

After the sounds of gunfire and a freedom song being sung about fighting for rights, Malema appears on the screen and introduces himself with the ANCYL flag in the background.

“You are called upon to join youth mass action for economic freedom in our lifetime.

“If you need a job, a house, land, nationalisation of mines, free education, better salaries, banning of labour brokers, water and electricity, join the ANCYL march to the Chamber of Mines, JSE and Union Building … Now or never, victory is certain,” Malema declares.

Last night ANCYL national spokesperson Floyd Shivambu and secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa were not available to comment on the logic behind posting the message with gunfire on the soundtrack.

In a statement yesterday Shivambu said the ANCYL’s mass action has received a boost following Cosatu’s decision to support it.

“Cosatu proves to the people of South Africa once again that the federation is a reliable ally in the struggles of the working class and the poor and [it] will never compromise principle because of petty politics,” he said.

“The ANC Youth League will unapologetically fight side by side with workers until all objectives of the Freedom Charter are met,” Shivambu said.

The Witness Facebook page asked readers about their thoughts on Julius Malema’s call for support for the economic freedom march. This is a selection of edited comments.

Londiwe Gugulethu Angel Cebekhulu “Malema Malema Malema I’m getting tired of hearing or seeing that name coz I am so not interested in politics!!!”

Chantelle Böheim: “This is definitely not going to help towards economic freedom, in fact it might just become the opposite.”

Carmia Supernerd Korsten: “Yawn”.

Apostle Njabulo Hlophe: “Julius come out of your closet and tell the ANCYL where are you getting all this money to buy mansions, big cars & this lavish lifestyle.”

Hayden Dunstan: “looks like he was so proud of himself for reading that whole address through without a mistake. Bless! secondly what the hell is an economic freedom fighter? Freedom was secured under Madiba a long time ago. People like Malema broke the economic system. isnt it more likely the time to be free of the past and leave the AK47 sound effects where they belong … in the past with those who actually suffered and did something about it?”

Samson Phakathi: “He is such an embarrassment to young people who need direction (education and moral regeneration) … Julius, we have been very patience with you and I think its now time to face you head on … as you are doing nothing but spitting on what the Mandelas, Sisulus, Tambos, Mbekis and Ngoyis of this world stood for … As a young person I am even embarrassed to associate myself with a youth leader who seem to do nothing but fuel divisions and unrealistic demands …”
