Malema ‘is SA’s own Hitler’ — Ramphele

2013-08-07 00:00

ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema is South Africa’s own Hitler or Mussolini, Dr Mamphela Ramphele said yesterday.

The Agang-SA leader was speaking to the media after delivering the second Frederik van Zyl Slabbert memorial lecture at the Pietersburg High School.

Ramphele said Malema was making dangerous promises on land expropriation to desperate people, like Hitler and Mussolini had done when they stepped forward to lead a population desperate for alternatives.

“Malema is not an alternative. He faces charges of corruption and does not pay his taxes,” she said.

Van Zyl Slabbert, who was an old friend of hers, would have been sad if he saw how many people still had no homes, work or food, 20 years after democracy, said Ramphele.

Van Zyl Slabbert led the Progressive Federal Party and was a founding member of the Institute for a Democratic South Africa. He died in 2010.

Ramphele said people had to think about the future. Another five years of the current demolishing of SA’s democracy would cause irreparable damage, she said.

During a recent visit to Mokopane (Potgietersrus), residents told Ramphele how the ANC had allegedly threatened to take away their RDP homes and pensions if they did not vote for the ruling party.

“It is criminal to threaten people with this,” she said.

Malema was diplomatic in his response, saying he respected Ramphele as a mother and therefore would not want to engage in the politics of name calling. “I want to pass a message to her that Ma Ramphele I still love you and respect you very much.”
