Man (20) arrested in connection with election day killings

A “JEALOUS” boyfriend was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of three friends, including his girlfriend, on election day in Pietermaritzburg.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the 20-year-old man was arrested near the scene about an hour after the shooting. His identity will only be revealed after his court appearance.

Jeff Pillay (45), Merl Maistry (44) and Musa Ndlovu (35), were killed at about 3 pm. The accused has been having a relationship with Maistry, a mother of four, for more than a year.

It is believed that he found them drinking at Pillay’s house and first shot and killed Pillay at point blank range in his head. Maistry and Ndlovu — Pillay’s neighbours — were also shot in the head. Maistry’s mother, Jenny Frank (60), said one of Maistry’s children, who was in the house, escaped soon after Pillay was shot.

Maistry’s first-born child, Renel Davis (24), said the family was not aware that the suspect and Maistry had a quarrel.
