Man accused of murdering girl wants to plead guilty

2014-07-01 00:00

A 30-YEAR-OLD man, Kwanele Ndlovu, who is charged with the murder of Yoliswa Ludidi (6) at Smero location last Tuesday, June 24, told a Pietermaritzburg magistrate yesterday he wants to plead guilty.

Yoliswa was the granddaughter of MPL Zanele Ludidi, chairperson of the conservation and environmental affairs portfolio committee.

She was studying in Grade 1 at Sigodini Primary School.

Ndlovu yesterday told magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde that he doesn’t want an attorney and will represent himself at his trial.

However, Ndawonde told him that since he has no legal training he would be well-advised to obtain the services of a lawyer.

The court was told that the allegations against Ndlovu were that he had offered to accompany the victim to the bush to go to the toilet.

Later the child was discovered to be missing, and her body was subsequently found in the bush.

Ndawonde established from the prosecution that the state is opposing Ndlovu’s release on bail, both because he has indicated that he wants to plead guilty, and for police to verify the safety of state witnesses in the case.

The post mortem report which will determine the exact cause of the little girl’s death is also still outstanding.

The case was postponed to July 9 pending the post mortem report and to give Ndlovu an opportunity to apply for legal aid.

Ndlovu stood calmly in the accused’s dock and answered questions clearly.

Asked if he has any previous convictions for any other offences, he replied that he did have one for assault in 2009 for which he was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. He did not elaborate on the circumstances of the assault charge.

He said he has no other cases pending against him, apart from the present murder charge.

The Witness reported last week that Yoliswa was last seen alive when she went into the bush near her aunt’s home in Smero to relieve herself. When she failed to return home as night fell, the family raised the alarm and a search was launched. Her body, which was fully clothed, was thereafter found lying in the veld.

Police reported that it appeared she had been struck over the head with an object similar to a knobkierrie.
