Man appears in court for holding his family hostage

2014-03-06 00:00

THE man alleged to have held his family hostage for seven hours in Imbali in February made his first appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court after being discharged from Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital.

The man appeared to be in pain, and a large scar was visible on his forehead.

Mandla Ngcobo (28) from Imbali appeared for contravening a protection order that he must not assault, threaten or intimidate Nokuthula Zondi. It is alleged that on January 28 he threatened to kill Zondi and her baby.

Ngcobo was unable to stand or speak for the duration of his short court appearance, but nodded his head in agreement with what the court said.

Shocked magistrate Ashin Singh asked what had happened to him, “Who assaulted him so badly?”

State prosecutor Thandeka Mkhize replied that it is alleged that Ngcobo shot himself during the hostage situation in Imbali.

His charge was added to the charges of robbery of a police officer as he allegedly took an officer’s firearm, resisting arrest and discharging the firearm in a public place on February 3.

He is also charged with attempted murder of four police officers, Captain Edward Mkhabela, Constable Nkanyiso Ndlanzi, Constable Mkhize and reservist Qondi Zondi. It’s also alleged that he tried to kill himself during the hostage situation.

Ngcobo was arrested after it was alleged that he stabbed his ex-girlfriend’s new partner.

The case was remanded until March 13 for further investigation.
