Man arrested after gun fight

2014-03-21 00:00

A MAN was arrested yesterday at Ultra City in Estcourt after a shoot-out with police officers.

Police came under fire during a routine crime prevention operation when they noticed a group of men attempting to steal goods out of a stationary vehicle at the Ultra City.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said police instructed the men to stop and leave the area, but they opened fire on the police.

Zwane said police retaliated and one 32-year-old suspect was shot and injured. He was subsequently taken to hospital and is under police guard.

Police recovered a knife, wheel spanners and other equipment.

The suspect will appear in court once he is released from hospital. He faces charges of attempted murder and attempted theft out of a motor vehicle.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for arresting the suspect.

“The hijacking and theft incidents out of trucks are a big concern in that area. We hope that the visibility of the police will decrease the criminal activities.”

Meanwhile, the case against several men, charged with theft out of trucks on the N3, was withdrawn by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
