Man dies after car catches fire

A MAN was killed when his car burst into flames after a collision near Mount Edgecombe on Tuesday.

The man, who police would only identify as S. Govender, died and a woman was injured when their cars collided on the N2 southbound after the M41 on-ramp near Mount Edgecombe, just north of Durban, at about 5.30 pm.

Crisis Medical Paramedics responded to reports of the serious collision.

Spokesperson Neil Powell said paramedics found a white Lexus sedan totally engulfed in flames.

“A female in a white BMW who was involved in the collision suffered moderate injuries. The injured lady was stabilised on scene before being transported to an area hospital for further care,” Powell said.

A tow truck company, Kurt’s Towing and Recovery, arrived on scene first and went to assist the driver of the Lexus.

“They noticed the man was entrapped and assured him help was on the way. Without warning, the car started to catch on fire.

“The tow truck drivers rushed to use eight fire extinguishers in an attempt to douse the flames. However, the flames became too big and there was no further assistance they could render him. Regrettably, the trapped man died due to the fire,” he said.

It is believed that one of the vehicles went out of control, crossed the median and slammed into the other head-on.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

“We confirm a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Durban North SAPS,” Zwane said.
