Man dies after fight, fall from bridge

2008-08-26 00:00

THE body of a man was found at the bottom of a bridge near Jika Joe informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg yesterday evening.

It was found in the stream running under the Larch Road bridge, which is the extension of Jabu Ndlovu Street after crossing Masukwane Street, at about 8 pm.

It is believed the man died after a knife fight with a man, whose identity is unknown, at about 7.30 pm. He had three stab wounds to the back.

It was not clear how he ended up in the stream, but local residents said they suspect that after being stabbed, he tried to run away and fell over the bridge.

A friend of the deceased, who identified herself only as Thembi, said they last saw him at about 4 pm when he went to do some shopping.

She said they panicked when they saw ambulances and police in the area.

“His girlfriend Thobeka and I went to find out what was happening. She was concerned that he might have been attacked on the way back,” said Thembi.

Along the way, people told Thobeka that her boyfriend’s body was lying under the bridge. At the scene of the fight, they showed her the sandals he was wearing when he left.
