Man escapes unhurt as car plunges into Durban sinkhole

2009-10-24 00:00

A HUGE water-filled sinkhole that suddenly opened up at the intersection of Essenwood and St Thomas roads in Musgrave, Durban, yesterday afternoon swallowed a car.

Netcare911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said the driver was travelling west and entered the intersection. “It was at that time the man said his car began to sink beneath the roadway, water gushing from the tarmac,” reported Wicks.

“Netcare911 paramedics responding to the scene were met with torrents of water surging down Essenwood Road. On arrival they found the floundering vehicle almost completely submerged, the windscreen wipers ardently working away.”

The driver had managed to clamber from the car as it sank and was uninjured, he said.

Wicks said the burst water pipe is alleged to be carrying waste water, which cannot be controlled. More of the intersection was expected to collapse.

Occupants of surrounding buildings were evacuated by paramedics and joined the people lining the streets to view the goings on.
