Man gets 24 years for killing son

2013-07-10 00:00

A FATHER (25) who stabbed his three-year-old son to death was jailed for 24 years by the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

On hearing the sentence, his former girlfriend and the mother of the child, Samukelisiwe Ngubane, said she felt the sentence was lenient.

The child, Ayabongwa, was killed to get back at the mother after the relationship ended.

Ngubane told The Witness yesterday that she was not happy at all with the sentence. “I wish he had been sentenced to capital punishment because of what he did to my son in my home … The fact that he will one day walk out of prison makes me feel unsafe.

“He killed an innocent child instead of dealing with the fact that I ended the relationship,” said Ngubane.

Sbonelo Ndlela stabbed his son, who was asleep at his mother’s home in kwaSwayimane, 13 times.

Ndlela, in his plea statement earlier, said the relationship was stormy and he suspected that Ngubane was cheating on him before she ended the relationship.

Acting Judge Piet Bezuidenhout said that Ndlela was driven by anger and frustration after being rejected by Ngubane. He said even though the child cried, he continued stabbing him until Ngubane’s family members came and he fled.

Bezuidenhout, handing down sentence, said the brutal attack on the defenceless child by the person who was supposed to be the protector was not acceptable. He said the fact that Ndlela drank in two taverns before going to Ngubane’s parental home showed he could not accept rejection.
