Man held after pair shot dead in bus

WAS it a crime of passion or a robbery?

That is the question in the minds of detectives who are investigating the killing of a man and a woman who were gunned down in a bus in Durban on Thursday evening.

A source with the bus company said reports from the scene suggested it may have been a crime of passion.

He said the bus had been impounded at the Sydenham police station because it was a crime scene.

The police would advise management when the ballistic and forensic investigations had been completed so they could retrieve it, the source said.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said: “We can confirm that an incident occurred on [Thursday] at about 5.50 pm where a 30-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were allegedly shot and killed inside the municipal bus while it was travelling along Sparks Road, Sydenham.”

He said the victims died at the scene and the motive for the killing was thought to be robbery.

“Sydenham police arrested a 23-year-old man and he will be charged with two counts of murder.”

Naicker said the suspect would appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.

“A firearm suspected to have been used in the shooting was recovered from the suspect.”

He said the names of the victims were not being released at this stage.
