Man held for killing mom, kids

2014-01-02 00:00

TOMORROW, while mourners gather for the funeral of a Chatsworth mother and her two teenage children, a close family member will appear in court only kilometres away for their murders.

The Chatsworth (44) man suspected of murdering Varsha Sathi Kandasamy (41), her daughter Nerissa (18) and son Magendran (15), handed himself over to police on New Year’s Eve, confirmed police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

The bodies were found in the family’s Timueria Street home in Moorton, Chatsworth, after other family members raised the alarm.

Their funeral service will be held at the Crossmoor Secondary School in Golden Poppy Crescent in Chatsworth tomorrow.

Concerned members of the deceaseds’ family had made numerous attempts on Monday to contact them, but on receiving no response, they went to the home only to find the premises locked. The family members then contacted Chatsworth police for assistance.

The police had to break down the door to gain entry. In the bedroom they found the bloodied body of the mother sprawled over the bed. Nearby were the bodies of her children. All had multiple injuries.

Paramedics declared them dead on the scene.

A “Hanuman stick” (similar to a club) was found at the crime scene and was seized by police. The house appeared to have be in disarray, but no items had been stolen. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the murders.
