Man held for theft of copper cable

2013-10-07 00:00

THE Phoenix tactical response team (TRT) arrested a 31-year-old man for the possession of stolen copper cables on Saturday.

Police were investigating allegations of copper cable theft, which led them to a homestead at Esikebheni area, Inanda.

At about 8.30 am police searched all the buildings and found 30 kilograms of copper cables in one of the rooms.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said: “We are unable to determine the value of the copper at this point as it may be municipality property which needs to be evaluated by the municipality or Telkom. This is depending on the types of cables found.”

Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, commended the Phoenix TRT for their excellent work and determination in arresting the suspect.

“We urge the community to continue to work hand-in-hand with the police in order to win the battle against copper cable theft in our province,” said Ngobeni in a statement.

The suspect will be charged for possession of stolen property and is due to appear at Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court today.
