Man hit by bakkie in Margate bar brawl

2009-12-08 00:00

SOUTH coast police are investigating a bar brawl that has left a man fighting for his life in a Margate hospital.

The circumstances surrounding the brawl are under police investigation.

It is thought to have started when an argument among patrons at Koko’s bar turned physical.

It is alleged that one of the men involved in the brawl left the scene and returned with a bakkie.

He then ran over another patron with the bakkie.

A group of patrons witnessed the incident and pulled the driver and his passenger from the bakkie. The group kicked and hit the two men.

Netcare spokesman Jeff Wicks said the driver of the bakkie was critically injured, as was the man he had run over.

They were treated and stabilised by Netcare911 paramedics at the scene before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, said Wicks.

The passenger in the bakkie fled the scene and is being sought by police.

Police spokeswoman Captain Zandra Wiid said a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened.

Police are still busy taking statements from eyewitnesses and the men involved in the incident.

She said she could not comment further on the brawl as it was only an allegation at this stage.

“We are investigating.

“If an assault case is opened, then we will make arrests,” she said.

The management of Koko’s could not be reached for comment.
