Man jailed for two knobstick murders

A KWAMBONAMBI man was convicted yesterday of killing his girlfriend with a knobkierrie after she had attended a party against his wishes, and of murdering his sister’s boyfriend in a similar way the very next day because he was “incensed” at how the man had treated his sister.

Pietermaritzburg high court Judge Sharmaine Balton, sitting with an assessor, sentenced Mbuso Doctor Ndlovu (27) to 30 years’ imprisonment — 15 years on each count of murder.

Balton said she took into account that Ndlovu pleaded guilty and expressed remorse, but said that if he had been truly remorseful he would have handed himself over to police immediately after the killings. Instead he fled and remained in hiding for 10 months until he was arrested.

She said it was “ironic” that he killed his sister’s boyfriend, Thengizwe Elias Mthiyane, because he was incensed at how he’d treated her, although he treated his girlfriend, Philile Mdadane (24), the same and went even further by killing her.

The judge said the country is plagued by people like Ndlovu and offences against women are reaching alarming proportions.

She said his actions were “despicable”, and he was clearly a person who has “no respect for the life and limb of others”.

In his plea to the court, Ndlovu said Mdadane — with whom he had a relationship for four years and who was the mother of his daughter, then a year old — went to a party on December 26 last year against his wishes. On her return they had a heated argument and Mdadane left, taking their daughter with her. He followed her and tried to remonstrate with her.

He said Mdadane handed over the child to another woman and then started to insult him.

“I begged the deceased to hear me out but she continued insulting me. Frustrated by what I perceived to be her stubbornness I eventually hit her on her head with a knobkierrie … that I was accustomed to carrying.” He struck her three times on her head till she fell to the ground.

The next day, while returning from a shebeen with his sister’s boyfriend (Mthiyane), they quarrelled about the way he treated his sister. He said Mthiyane hit him with a knobkierrie and he wrested it from him and hit Mthiyane several times.
