Man killed after crashing into truck

2013-09-04 00:00

A 22-YEAR-OLD man died when his car rear-ended a truck on the N3 in Pietermaritzburg during the early hours of yesterday morning.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the force of the accident, on the N3 northbound near Peter Brown Drive, overturned the truck.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the driver of the vehicle was later identified as Saab Valjee.

The driver of the truck and his assistant sustained slight injuries.

Zwane said Town Hill police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, the N3 near Van Reenen’s Pass was closed for most of yesterday, causing heavy delays for hundreds of travellers.

Around midnight on Tuesday a truck spilled oil on the road, making it unsafe. The road was closed in the morning to clean up the spill and only opened at around 4.20 pm. Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said: “We realise that closing the road caused a serious inconvenience for motorists, but we had to ensure that the road and the motorists were safe.”

Traffic was diverted to alternative routes such as the R103.
