Man killed and three others hurt in attack after court appearance

2008-04-18 00:00

A MAN was killed and three others were seriously injured in Bergville, during an ambush believed to be connected to a land dispute faction fight that apparently ended in a peace deal last month.

The man, identified only as Nkala, was killed when a minibus taxi he and 16 others were travelling in from Bergville was sprayed with bullets.

They were returning from attending a court case related to the faction fighting between Magangangozi and Mhlwazini clans.

In court, Muzi Dlamini, who was arrested last month for a murder of a Mhlwazini man, was granted bail.

“This [ambush] was definitely triggered by Muzi Dlamini getting bail, because after the magistrate announced the bail, Mhlwazini people just walked out of the court. Others were heard expressing dissatisfaction,” said Gabe Zondo, the wife of Mhlwazini headman Mthandani Zondo.

The ambushed taxi belongs to Dlamini.

Magangangozi headman Mxenge Zondo expressed shock at the latest attack. He said this is proof that faction fighting has not ended, and called on the law to act.

Premier S’bu Ndebele has expressed shock over the attack.
