Man killed in Richmond road accident

2014-10-31 00:00

A HORROR accident on the Richmond road claimed the life of a man believed to be a teacher in the Richmond area.

The man, who had not been identified by yesterday, was driving alone on the Richmond road heading towards Pietermaritzburg, and it seems he lost control of the vehicle, an old model BMW, and crashed into a ditch.

School papers were believed to have been found at the scene. It was not immediately clear which school he was from.

The Department of Education said it was not aware of any teacher being killed in an accident.

Sources at the scene said it seems that while driving on the Richmond road just after the Thornville turn-off, the driver may have experienced a burst tyre on a curve and lost control of the car, which crashed through the road barricade and landed in the ditch.

The driver was well-dressed in what looked like a white shirt and cream pants and was still wearing his seat belt when he was pulled out of the car.

“We believe that he was a schoolteacher. There are papers lying on the ground,” said an official.
