Man killed ‘over woman’

2010-12-11 00:00

A MAN was shot dead in Pietermaritzburg yesterday evening in a case believed to be related to infidelity.

The shooting happened at a tyre warehouse in Allandale Road at about 5 pm. After the death of former employee Raymond Paul (28), the 34-year-old suspect, who is the owner of the business, got into his white Mercedes Benz and drove to Mountain Rise police station where he handed himself over.

The woman at the centre of the squabble was seen leaving the shop soon after the incident.

Paul’s mother and other family members, who arrived at the scene about an hour later, stood weeping a short distance from where his body lay covered on the forecourt.

His father was seen shouting that the alleged killer had destroyed his son’s marriage and put his family “through months of hell”.

“Where is this man? I want to kill him. I don’t care what the cops will do because they did not do anything when we told them what this man was doing to my son,” said the father.

It is alleged that the murder was the culmination of months of quarrelling between Paul and the suspect over Paul’s ex-wife.

The deceased, who worked as a manager at the suspect’s business, resigned about six months ago after allegedly finding out that his wife had been having an affair with his employer for the past seven years. They then divorced.

A source said the two have been seen quarrelling about the matter on a number of occasions.

“Today this guy [Paul] came to the shop carrying a small blade. There was an altercation before [the suspect] pulled a gun. [Paul] tried to run away, but [the suspect] fired a shot and hit him in the chest. He died shortly afterwards,” said an eyewitness.

Paul’s cousin, who declined to be named, said: “His wife was ‘jollying’ with the owner of the shop for the past seven years. [Paul], who had been working for the shop for seven years, only found out about it seven months ago.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the suspect arrived at the Mountain Rise police station with a blade, which he said Paul used to attack him.

“He was taken into custody after being charged with murder. He will appear in court soon,” said Jeevan.
