Man sentenced to life in jail for cop’s murder

2012-10-19 00:00

A MAN was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for killing police officer Ajith Krishanlal and 15 years for robbing a KFC outlet in Pinetown.

Elvis Luvuyo Shasha (23) was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to both charges, said police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

His co-accused, Mduduzi Dlamini (42), was still in custody, and would appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday for bail application.

Shasha was arrested in Umlazi on Wednesday last week, having sustained gunshot wounds, believed to have been from a shootout during the robbery. The other suspect was arrested on the same day in Pinetown.

On Friday two weeks ago, Detective Constable Krishanlal and Detective Constable Gerome Mngoma attended to a robbery in progress at a KFC outlet in New Germany, Pinetown.

A shootout ensued, and both officers were wounded. Krishanlal died in hospital, while Mngoma was still in a serious, but stable condition.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentencing sent a strong message to criminals who kill police officers.

“We hope that the second suspect will soon face the judge to answer for his acts,” she said.
