Man shocked after lightning bolt strikes tree at Albert Falls dam

2015-01-05 00:00

A MASSIVE lightning strike in Albert Falls, caught on camera, shocked a man packing up his fishing gear.

With his wife, Julie, and their daughter still on his boat, Kokstad resident Wayne Tarr was wading in the water when a lightning bolt shot down, hitting a tree just metres from where he was moored.

“I was terrified; it was one helluva shock. I was covering my boat and about knee-deep in water when it struck. I have often been around lightning like this while fishing, but never been shocked like that. It was absolutely close,” Wayne said.

Meanwhile, after witnessing what had happened, their 16-year-old son, Michael, who was at a cottage overlooking the dam at which they were fishing, filmed the remainder of the storm.

The video shows a rare glimpse of lightning striking a tree from across the Albert Falls Dam.

Julie said they knew something had happened when Wayne leapt onto their fishing boat.

“We were petrified. I knew something was wrong when I watched Wayne jump out of the water. It just happened so suddenly and out of nowhere,” she said.

Advisories were issued for KwaZulu-Natal by the South African Weather Service over the weekend for severe thunderstorms across the province, including in the Midlands.

Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas can expect more thunderstorms and rainy weather throughout the week.
