Man shoots nurse in leg, kills himself

2011-11-21 00:00

A GREY’S Hospital student nurse is lucky to be alive after she was shot in the leg by her boyfriend who then turned the gun on himself, firing one shot in the head which killed him instantly on Saturday afternoon.

It is believed that it was a lovers’ quarrel which led to the incident in Imbali unit three at the home of the boyfriend, Sandile Msomi, who worked at the Gama Funeral Parlour.

When The Witness visited Nontobeko Amanda Sithole (Msomi’s girlfriend) in Edendale Hospital, she refused to give consent for the newspaper to talk to her about the incident.

Family members and neighbours, who spoke to The Witness on condition of anonymity, said there was not much they could say about the incident as the couple was inside a room when they heard the two gun shots.

“At this stage we do not know what happened. The only person who can tell us is Nontobeko because she was in the room with Sandile,” said a family member.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan confirmed the incident. “At this stage it is believed that there was an arguement between the couple who were inside a room and shortly after that two gun shots were heard,” said Jeevan.

She said when family members rushed into the room to see what was going on, Sithole had sustained a gunshot wound in the right thigh and her boyfriend had turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head. He had died at the scene.

“Sithole was rushed to Edendale Hospital where she is recieving medical attention,” she said.

Jeevan said no arrest has been made, but police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
