Man shoots, tracks intruder

A 60-YEAR-OLD man defended himself by shooting a trespasser early yesterday morning on his smallholding behind Chase Valley.

Anton Venter’s fence alarm went off at around 2 am. When he went outside to investigate it appeared that the intruders had fled.

However Venter continued to stand guard and after more than an hour has passed, he saw the intruders return.

“I saw them walking around on the holding,” said Venter. “We had just put in a new security light and I saw it go off. I thought they were going to go into the chicken shed and steal some chickens.

“I saw them coming towards me and I shouted at them. They tried to attack me with a pipe”.

Venter fired and wounded one man in the foot, causing the men to flee.

He followed and at around 6:30 am, he found a man hopping around at the bottom of Town Bush Road and contacted both the police and the ambulance. “I am really tired of this,” said Venter. “This is about the seventh time that people have tried to break into our premises.”

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan, said Venter has opened a case for damage to property, assault and trespassing.
