Man shot after pulling gas gun on police, bar patrons

A MAN who threatened tavern patrons with a gas gun while demanding they give him their alcohol, was shot and injured by police in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday evening.

The 24-year-old man was shot in both legs after he allegedly threatened police with the same gun.

It is alleged that the man and his four companions entered Differ Tavern in Caluza at about 4 pm and showed people the firearm.

“When people tried to stop him from drinking their beer, he would lift up his T-shirt to show them the firearm,” said tavern owner Differ Motaung.

“People called me to intervene, but when I arrived he and his companions had already left.

“He later returned to the tavern alone. I told him not to enter the tavern with the gun. He said he carried a gun because he had enemies in Ashdown, which is about three kilometres away. When I asked him to buy the beer and take it home, he said he wanted stay and socialise with my customers,” said Motaung.

He said police arrived at about 7 pm and the gunman ran away.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the man refused to comply when police ordered him to stop.

She said he pulled out the firearm instead, which is when police shot him in both legs.

“Police discovered that the firearm was a gas gun, which is used for training purposes. It is not actually a gun, but not a toy either.”

Jeevan said the suspect, who is in Edendale Hospital, was charged with pointing a firearm.
