Man slips, drowns in Msunduzi

2011-09-28 00:00

A MAN drowned after apparently slipping into the Msunduzi River yesterday morning.

His body was retrieved by police divers after a fisherman had raised the alarm that the man was in distress. The unidentified black man was about 30 years old, of medium build, light in complexion, and bald. He was wearing grey pants, a check black and grey short sleeve shirt and black shoes.

The body was recovered in the Msunduzi River next to Darvill Road near the Scottsville Racecourse. According to police, a local fisherman noticed the man “hanging onto trees” in the river calling for help; he ran to a nearby residence and called the emergency services, but when he returned the man had disappeared.

The police and the Netcare 911 paramedics were called to the scene and found the body after a 15-minute search.

Reports from the scene indicate that the man could have slipped down the steep embankment at the side of the river behind Newton School.

SAPS spokesperson Joey Jeevan asked anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Captain Eben Holder at SAPS Pietermaritzburg Detective Services on 033 845 2425 or on his cell number at 079 696 3728.
