Man stoned to death for setting mom’s hut on fire

A MAN was killed by an angry community in Elandskop Section 14 at the weekend after he burned down his mother’s house and assaulted his sister.

Nhlanhla Dlamini’s family came to believe the 46-year-old was possessed by spirits when he had tried to attack his mother with a knife “some time ago”, said his brother, who spoke to The Witness on condition of anonymity.

“After he tried to stab our mother, we got a protection order against him and he was sent away from the family,” he said.

On Saturday, while the family was having a tombstone unveiling ceremony at the home, Dlamini showed up without an invitation.

“He came here yesterday [Saturday] and burnt down three huts belonging to our mother.

“As we had just slaughtered cows for the ceremony, they were all in there, including her belongings and food that was being prepared,” he said.

He said it was the first time Dlamini had been to the house since his protection order.

“He was very problematic.”

After burning down the huts, he was taken from the family’s property and stoned to death by angry members of the community.

Now that Dlamini was dead, the family felt free.

“My mother will feel much safer now,” said his brother.

However, he said, they would not be able to repair the damage caused by the fire. “My mother and sister live here on their own. We will need help in repairing the damage.”

The mood at the family’s Elandskop home was festive as the ceremony — which began on Friday — was in its final day yesterday.

Numerous attempts to get a comment from the police were unsuccessful yesterday afternoon and evening.
