Man threatens to jump off bridge, cops step in

2014-08-20 00:00

A MAN stood perilously on top of the New England Road bridge yesterday afternoon and threatened to jump.

The man, who allegedly had a fight with his girlfriend leading up to the suicide bid, was spotted by Carol Cowley, the wife of police officer Ian Cowley, a member of the search and rescue unit. Carol was on her way to collect her children from school at around 2 pm when she saw the man.

“I was just driving past and I saw him there, his feet dangling near the sign board … I knew it was not a very safe place to be so I called my husband who is a police officer,” she said.

A source at the scene said: “The police tried to talk him off the edge, but he was not interested; he said his life was over and everyone was fighting with him.”

The source added that the police pulled him off the bridge as soon as they got a chance to grab him.

RTI spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu said the N3 southbound lane was temporarily closed. “There were concerns that if he jumps, he might injure innocent people … the police and negotiators were called and they managed to talk him off from jumping.”

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the man was taken to Northdale Hospital for medical attention.
