Man wanted for cellphone scam

2014-03-12 00:00

AFTER a Pietermaritzburg woman fell for a classic scam, police have appealed for information that may help them solve the case.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they believe that the man pictured can help regarding the incident.

On January 28, a 48-year-old woman received a SMS saying she had won R350 000, and that to claim her prize she should phone the supplied cellphone number.

She contacted the number and was convinced to deposit R1 850 into an account to receive her winnings, said Zwane.

She deposited the money and contacted the number again to confirm receipt.

She was then told to wait for the claim to be processed, but never received her winnings and the caller could not be reached again. Realising she was the victim of a con, she reported the incident to police.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of the man pictured should contact Detective Warrant Officer Mervin Anthony on 033 845 2782 or 073 020 3520 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
